Welcome to the wonderful world of the steel drum, the pitch-perfect percussion instrument we adore at Peace Drums Project!
Also known as the steel pan, this marvel of musical engineering is made from a 55-gallon oil drum that has been expertly tuned to produce a wide range of musical notes. Originating from the Caribbean, the steel drum has become an essential part of many musical styles, including calypso, reggae, soca, jazz, classical, and world music.

Playing the steel drum
The steel drum is played with a pair of drumsticks that strike the drum's surface to produce different notes, depending on where they hit and how hard they're played. Some steel drums have multiple playing surfaces, each with its own distinctive sound.

3 Fun Steel-drum facts
- The steel drum is the only instrument to be invented in the 20th century. Its development began in Trinidad and Tobago in the early 20th century, where musicians experimented with creating musical sounds from discarded oil barrels.
- Steel drums are not just one instrument but a family of instruments. They range from the soprano, which produces the highest notes, to the bass, which produces the lowest notes. The number of drums in a steel drum band can range from six to over one hundred.
- The steel drum has been used in unexpected ways, including in the creation of a symphony orchestra. In 1997, the National Symphony Orchestra of Trinidad and Tobago, consisting entirely of steel drums, was created, marking the first time a steel orchestra was recognized as a national symphony orchestra.
