Building Peace, One Beat at a Time: An Interview with Harvey of Peace Drums Project
At Peace Drums Project, we believe that music has the power to bridge divides and foster lasting connections.
In this special interview, we sit down with Harvey, one of the visionaries behind the project, to talk about the long-term goals of Peace Drums and the transformative role music plays in peacebuilding.
Harvey shares his insights into where we’re headed, the exciting possibilities for growth, and the crucial impact we’re making — one steel drum beat at a time.
Q: Harvey, can you share your thoughts on the long-term goals and broader impact of the Peace Drums Project?
Harvey: Our long-term goal is to expand steel bands across Israel and the West Bank, impacting 300 kids every week.
To get there, we need more teachers, and we're already talking to pan players from Trinidad & Tobago and the US who are interested in coming here to teach.
But it’s not just about numbers—it’s about giving our students, both current and alumni, the chance to see themselves as global citizens.
We’re using music as a way to shape future leaders who can bring peace beyond borders.
Q: How do you see the connections formed through Peace Drums influencing larger peace efforts in the future?
Harvey: The connections made today are going to ripple out into the future. I see our students and alumni already stepping up as leaders in their communities, becoming voices of reason when it comes to the Israel/Palestine conflict.
The friendships and understanding they build through music will become a foundation for larger peace efforts. It’s the human connections, not just the music, that create lasting change.
Q: Are there any upcoming plans for expansion or events that supporters can look forward to?
Harvey: While we don’t have concrete plans at the moment, we’re keeping an eye on the situation and waiting for a durable ceasefire.
Once that happens, we’re ready to expand and bring in more kids and teachers.
The vision is clear; we’re just waiting for the right moment to push forward.
Q: How do you envision the project growing in the next few years?
Harvey: In the next few years, I see us growing to reach 300 kids a week.
That means more teachers, more bands, and a bigger impact.
We want to make steel drum music a common thread that unites children from both sides of the conflict and gives them a way to connect beyond politics or borders.
Q: What role does music play in peacebuilding, from your perspective?
Harvey: Music has this incredible power to cut through the noise of conflict.
Every day, we see violence and unrest, but in our classrooms, I witness acts of love and connection through music.
It allows kids to express themselves in ways that words can’t. It helps them see the humanity in one another.
That’s where peace starts—with understanding, and music is a bridge to that understanding.
